Grade 1/2
Term 3
Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope that you had a wonderful mid-year break and are ready for a busy term ahead.
Mathematics
In Term 3, the focus for maths will primarily be on Multiplication, Division and Measurement. Concepts taught over these units will include practical situations involving equal sharing and grouping, representing situations involving manipulatives, multiplying and dividing by one digit numbers using repeated addition, equal groups, arrays and partitioning as well as comparing, measuring and ordering an object's length, mass and capacity using informal measures and using reasoning to justify their decisions. We encourage you to work with your child and discuss everyday mathematics that involves the concepts mentioned above.
English
Every morning, as part of the Literacy Block, classes will focus on delivering daily phonics instruction as part of their reading lessons. Students will continue to be immersed in explicit instruction on understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, as well as how to blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in words to support reading and writing. Students will also continue to build on their comprehension of texts by applying reading strategies to a range of text types.
Writing - This term, the students will focus on narrative writing. Students will be taught about the structure and language features of narratives and will learn how to incorporate writing traits into their work. There will also be a focus on having students publish their work.
Daily handwriting practice, as part of our phonics instruction, is also embedded in the Literacy Block.
Integrated Studies
Students will be undertaking a Geography unit for Integrated Studies titled ‘Where are we in the world?’ Students will learn about concepts such as the places where they live, features of various locations, how to look after them, how places are identified and named, the interconnections between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the representation of Australia as states and territories and people’s interconnections with places in Australia and the world.
